I’m having trouble with the website/setting up my fundraising page – Where can I get help?

The easiest way for your guests to secure their seat at your Feast is to RSVP directly on your fundraising page. You can track guest registration, dietary requirements. donations, and you can change the number of seats at your Feast any time you like.

You can also manage your guest RSPVs via SMS, social media, email or a Facebook event instead. Your page will still be able to collect your donations and manage your fundraising.

Getting Started

What is Feast for Freedom?

Feast for Freedom is a shared food experience in aid of people seeking asylum. Held throughout Australia, it is a celebration of the flavours and cultural diversity that people seeking asylum bring to Australia.

You can register to host your own Feast, following recipes gifted by our Cooks - wonderful people from diverse places who were granted asylum in Australia. They have hand-selected these recipes from their own personal cookbooks for you to prepare in your home or workplace for family and friends to raise funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

The funds you raise will help provide food, shelter and health services for over 7,000 people seeking asylum who need support settling into Australia every year.

When is Feast for Freedom?

Feast for Freedom is back for March 2024 and our Feast for Freedom Week will run Monday 18 – Sunday 24 March, 2024.

Each Host can choose the day and time they would like to hold their Feast, and most have their Feast during the Feast Week. If you are eager to host a Feast but are not free that week, you can host your Feast at a time that suits, we just ask that you have wrapped up your fundraising by Tuesday 30 April.

Where is Feast for Freedom held?

As a host, you have the freedom to choose where you would like to hold your Feast. It could be in your home, your workplace, a community venue, or even a park!

Why should I get involved?

Feast for Freedom gives you the opportunity to raise funds to support people seeking asylum in a fun, delicious and celebratory way with friends and family.

Imagine sitting down to a tasty meal that has been made following recipes handed down generation after generation by a person who received asylum here in Australia. It’s a great way to help provide food, shelter and health services for over 7,000 people seeking asylum who need support settling into Australia every year.

Can I host a Feast if I am overseas?

Unfortunately, Feast for Freedom is an Australia-only campaign.

What if I’m not available during Feast Week? Can I host my Feast another day?

Absolutely. While we encourage our hosts to hold their Feasts during that particular week (18 - 24 March, 2024), you are more than welcome to hold it a bit before or after if that works best for you. Please note, all Feasts and fundraising need to be completed by 30 April.

Who will be cooking the Feast?

As the host, you will be in charge of preparing the Feast. Most hosts will cook themselves, but you can enlist the help of a friend who you know is a fantastic cook if you wish.

You could also do a pot-luck style Feast where you ask your guests to contribute a dish if you wish.

I’m not a great cook – can I still host a Feast?

Absolutely! Our cooks have hand-selected dishes that are simple enough for anyone to master and impress their friends with but you can also make adjustments or choose other recipes that you are more comfortable cooking.

For those hosting their Feast in Melbourne, you can also add an authentic starter, side salad or dessert to your Feast with our award-winning social enterprise ASRC Catering. Check out the menu at catering.asrc.org.au

Who should I invite to the Feast?

Friends, family, coworkers, neighbours, customers - it’s your choice!

How do I invite guests to my Feast?

The easiest way to invite guests to your Feast is to share the link to your fundraising page where they can RSVP to your Feast directly. That way you will be able to see your guest list, their contact details and dietary requirements, and you can update the number of seats at your Feast any time you like.

You can also invite guests in other ways - choose whatever works best for you. You can set up a Facebook event, or a WhatsApp group, email, text message or old fashioned phone call. For large scale, ticketed or workplace Feasts, you could manage ticketing and RSVPs via Humanitix, EventBrite or TryBooking if you wish. Be sure to include a link to your fundraising page so they can donate online with ease.

Your personal Feast for Freedom page will collect your donations and manage your fundraising. Make sure you share this URL with your guests so they can donate directly to your Feast.

We've also mocked up some handy invite templates which you can access on our Resources page, and you can also download a personalised poster with a unique QR code to your fundraising page which will be useful to display at your Feast to collect those last minute donations.

When asking people to join you, one of the most important things to share with them is why you’ve chosen to host a Feast, why this cause and this event are important to you, and the impact their donation can make on the lives of refugees and people seeking safety in Australia.

What will be sent to me?

We will send each host a complementary kit with a recipe booklet, a table centrepiece and conversation starter cards to use at your Feast.

Can two (or more) people co-host a Feast?

Yes you can co-host but all communications will be sent to one person so ensure you register with the details of the host who prefers to receive all Feast communications and details of the donations your Feast has received.

The Recipes

Where can I find the recipes?

You can find a taste of the recipes on offer on the our Cooks and Recipes page. You will receive the full recipe booklet in your Host Kit and you will get full access to the recipes in your dashboard once you register as a Host.

Are the recipes vegetarian, vegan or gluten free?

There are vegetarian options but you are also welcome to adjust the recipes to make them vegan, gluten-free or to match any dietary requirements or taste preferences you may have.

Can the recipes be changed to accommodate for dietary restrictions?

Sure! You are welcome to adjust the recipes to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Can I alter the recipes or cook something else?

Sure! The recipes have been hand-selected for this event as gifts to our hosts by people who have previously sought asylum in Australia but if you would like to alter them to your taste, feel free to choose another recipe from the same cuisine or develop your own menu based on your own family’s background.

Fundraising & the Asylum Seeker

What will the funds raised be used for?

All funds are donated directly to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and used to support the ASRC’s work with over 7,000 people seeking asylum each year, providing food, shelter, and healthcare services. See ‘Where your funds go’ for more details.

How do I raise funds?

When you register as a host, a personal fundraising page will be created for you. For help setting up your page, view our handy User Guide here.

You can share your fundraising page in a variety of ways, including social media, email, text message and messaging apps, and ask your friends and family to donate directly to your Feast. Funds raised on your fundraising page will be transferred directly to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

You’re also able to download a personalised poster with a unique QR code to your fundraising page which you can display at your Feast to collect last minute donations.

You can also request donation boxes by emailing us at feastforfreedom@asrc.org.au which we can post out to you. These boxes can be displayed at your workplace and on your table during the Feast for cash donations.

How much should people donate during the Feast?

We recommend each person donates at least the equivalent of what they would spend on a night out in a restaurant.

You can also let them know the impact their donation will make, for example, $25 can help provide warm community meals so people seeking asylum can share a meal in a welcoming environment; $65 can go towards crisis accommodation for a person that has nowhere else to go; $105 can help provide a family with culturally familiar foods and essential groceries including a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables so they don’t go without: and $176 can help fund healthcare and vital medications for the treatment of chronic illnesses for a person who doesn’t have Medicare.
